Melissa Etheridge: I’ve fallen off the pedestal
April 30, 2010
American Idol‘s Crystal Bowersox has said that she likes to have powerful women sign her guitar, beginning with an autograph from her idol, Melissa Etheridge. “My kids watch, and I think the first time she was on they stopped it and asked, ‘Mom, is that your signature on her guitar?’” Melissa tells In Touch, adding that she can’t recall the meeting, but adds that there are “parallels” between their lives. “We are very different of course, but her experiences, like her dad driving her around to play, that was my experience too. Her dedication and her soulfulness and what music means to her – that is what people relate to.”
Including Melissa herself, who is turning to music to get her through a painful time — her recent split with partner Tammy Lynn Michaels after nine years together — with her new album, Fearless Love. “Most people are asking if I am okay, and it is really sad. I actually feel sorry for the gay community because they really like to put you on a pedestal. And I have to say, ‘I know, I have fallen off again – sorry,’” she tells In Touch. “I know and I want to be honest and truthful about this. I am trying to be the best me I can be.”
