Chrysler Super Bowl Commercial Controversy: An Ad for Obama?

Chrysler Super Bowl Commercial Controversy: An Ad for Obama?

GLADD wants Roland Martin to be fired for his comments related to the David Beckham H&M commercial that aired during last night’s Super Bowl.

Conversely, Karl Rove and a few other Republicans are afraid that a different Super Bowl ad was created with the aim of getting President Barack Obama rehired.

The spot in question is narrated by Clint Eastwood and touts both Chrysler and the turnaround of the auto industry in Detroit, with the actor saying via voiceover: It’s “halftime in America and our second half’s about to begin.”

Might this be a veiled reference to a second term for Obama?

Rove believes so, pointing to Eastwood’s claim that Detroit “almost lost everything, but we all pulled together” and “now Motor City is fighting again” as support for the administration’s bailout of various companies in the area.

“I was, frankly, offended by it,” Karl Rove told Fox News this morning. “I’m a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, I thought it was an extremely well-done ad, but it is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising.”

Michelle Malkin also took issue with what she referred to as an “auto bailout ad,” which is interesting only because Eastwood has typically been known as a strong conservative.

He even told the Los Angeles Times last year: “We shouldn’t be bailing out the banks and car companies. If a CEO can’t figure out how to make his company profitable, then he shouldn’t be the CEO.”

Watch the commercial above and decide: Great ad? Or great ad… with an agenda?

Should Roland Martin Be Fired for David Beckham Underwear Ad Tweets?

Exposed body parts from the Super Bowl continue to stir up controversy across the Internet.

With M.I.A.’s immature finger flip causing both NBC and the NFL to apologize, GLADD is now up in arms over comments made last night by CNN contributor Roland Martin.

While watching the Giants victory over the Patriots, Martin Tweeted the following in response to David Beckham’s underwear ad for H&M (below):

GLADD noticed and wrote back: “Advocates of gay bashing have no place at CNN,” to which Martin then replied:

“You’re clearly out of touch and clueless with what I tweeted. Way to assume, but you’re way off base.”

The gay rights organization has since sent around an online petition that pushes for to Martin be fired. It has collected approximately 2,000 signatures so far.

What do you think of Martin’s comments? Homophobic? Or just lame and unfunny? Should he be fired?

Jessica Simpson, Huge Boobs Attend Super Bowl

She may not have been dating one of the game’s starting quarterbacks, but Jessica Simpson still made her presence felt at last night’s Super Bowl.

The pregnant singer Tweeted a photo of herself and a friend from their box at Lucas Oil Stadium, showing off her ample…. rooting interest in the following Twit pic:

Earlier in the week, Jessica had explained her support of the Patriots by saying fiance Eric Johnson was from Boston and: “I’m a Cowboys fan, so I cannot root for the Giants!”

Fair enough. But we all know why Simpson is a Cowboys fan, right? Not sure if Johnson would really want to hear that.

PTC Blames NBC, NFL for M.I.A. Halftime Bird

You won’t believe this, but the Parents Television Council (PTC) has something to say about the bird that M.I.A. flipped during last night’s Super Bowl halftime show.

As previously reported and depicted, this rapper aimed her middle finger directly at a NBC camera during her brief time on stage with Madonna, an act that resulted in both the network and the NFL issuing an apology.

But the PTC has now released its own statement, coming down on the league for promising a clean show.

“NBC fumbled and the NFL lied because a performer known as M.I.A. felt it necessary to flip off millions of families,” wrote PTC president Tim Winter. “It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer.

“Last week the NFL formally told the PTC – and the American public – that the Super Bowl halftime show would be ‘appropriate.’ Most families would agree that the middle finger aimed directly at them is not appropriate, especially during the most-watched television event of the year.”

Winter went on to blame NBC for failing to properly police itself, as well as for hiring the kind of talent that took to the stage.

“The mechanism NBC had in place to catch this type of material completely failed, and the network cannot say it was caught off guard… They chose a lineup full of performers who have based their careers on shock, profanity and titillation. Instead of preventing indecent material, they enabled it. M.I.A. used a middle finger shamelessly to bring controversial attention to herself, while effectively telling an audience filled with children, ‘F– you.’”

We agree with PTC in that M.I.A. is pathetic for resorting to such a maneuver in order to generate headlines. More than that, we just wish she had aimed the finger, privately, in the PTC’s direction instead.

Gisele Bundchen to Giants Fans: Blame Wes Welker!

Gisele Bundchen prayed for husband Ton Brady to win the Super Bowl last night.

Alas, when those prayers were not answered – the Patriots fell to the Giants 21-17 – the super model turned to curse-filled trash talking.

comforting tom 439x319 Gisele Bundchen to Giants Fans: Blame Wes Welker!

It’s okay, dear. I’ll catch all of your balls tonight.

On her way out of Lucas Oil Stadium last night, New York fans taunted Gisele, with one yelling: “Eli owns your husband!”

At this, Bundchen turned around and replied: “My husband cannot f-cking throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.”

Gisele, of course, is referring to a number of near-catches by Patriot wide receivers, most notably a missed snag by Wes Welker at the New York 20-yard line with four minutes remaining and New England driving for a clinching score. Should Welker have had it? Probably. Did Brady throw a couple balls behind his teammates in the second half, along with a key interception? Yes.

Watch the Gisele/fan interaction now at The Insider.

Josh Powell Kills Self, Sons in Planned House Explosion

This story is pretty much as awful as it gets.

Josh Powell, a suspect in his wife’s 2009 disappearance, set up an explosion of his home yesterday that resulted in his own death, along with the death of his two sons.

suspected killer 300x400 Josh Powell Kills Self, Sons in Planned House Explosion

As first reported by The Seattle Times, a case worker dropped Powell’s two kids of at his house in Graham, Washington yesterday and was then “forced out,” said a spokesman for Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, adding: “An explosion happened shortly thereafter.”

Authorities later recovered three bodies from the rubble who they believe are Josh Powell and his sons Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5.

The kids had been in the custody of their grandparents; and a family court judge had told Josh, earlier in the week, that he would have to undergo a psychological review before having an opportunity to have them under his care again.

Powell’s attorney in that case, Jeffrey Bassett, told The Associated Press that he received a three-word email from his client minutes before the explosion that read: “I’m sorry, goodbye.”

Susan Powell went missing in 2009. Soon after, Josh accused the police of covering up a conspiracy in their investigation. No charges were ever filed against him.

Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton Perform America the Beautiful at Super Bowl

It didn’t get the attention of Kelly Clarkson’s national anthem or Madonna’s halftime show (both great), but Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton performed a beautiful rendition of “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl XLVI last night.

The married country stars did justice to the classic, often overshadowed by “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America,” but a wonderful tribute to our nation.

Watch their duet below:

After the Giants pulled off an insane comeback, Blake Shelton ran it back as one of the coaches/judges on NBC’s hit singing competition.

The Voice Season 2 Premiere Recap: The Fab Four Return, Turn Around For Talent!

The Voice is back, and better than ever.

In the Season 2 premiere, the NBC singing competition showed why it became a big hit last spring – the chemistry of the four judges and the unexpected talent.

For those unfamiliar, the judges turn around, sight unseen, if they like someone trying out. That person then chooses which star he/she wants to coach them.

the voice season 2 pic 510x383 The Voice Season 2 Premiere Recap: The Fab Four Return, Turn Around For Talent!

Let’s get down to business and see who joined Team Christina Aguilera, Team Blake Shelton, Team Cee Lo Green and Team Adam Levine last night …

Jesse Campbell and his surprising, tragic back story took second fiddle to his rendition of “A Song For You” that caused all four judges to turn around.

After a funny, borderline racist comment from Cee Lo to Christina, he opted for Team Christina. Watch his performance and the fight for him here:

Later on, Christina also added Chris Mann, who’s an opera singer! Who expected him to start singing in Italian on The Voice? Check it out below …

RaeLynn was the first audition of the night, and was gunning for Team Blake from the start. After all, she sang Miranda Lambert’s “Hell on Heels.”

Adam and Blake both turned around but she obviously chose Blake:

Juliet Simms somewhat surprisingly picked Cee Lo over Adam, who seemed a better fit for her gritty rock raspy-voiced edge. Here’s her audition:

Adam picked up Tony Lucca, who was a Mousketeer with Christina years ago. Not that she remembered him, but she did turn around at least.

Everyone did, but in the end, Adam got his first team member in Tony, who once performed “Devil Town” on the Friday Night Lights soundtrack:

Daniel Rosa, Gonul Aksoy, Ben Baxter, and Mark Trussell also tried out, but did not get anyone to turn around. There is still hope, however.

If the coaches don’t fill out their teams by the end, the best of the rest may get another crack at it. So … there’s something to comfort them?

What did you think of The Voice Season 2 premiere? Are you glad it’s back? Who was your favorite singer trying out Sunday night?

Which singing competition is better?

Mario Manningham Super Bowl Catch: The Best Ever?

The New York Giants needed a big play late in the Super Bowl and Eli Manning delivered, lofting a pass to Mario Manningham that sent them on their way to a winning drive.

Somehow managing to keep two feet in bounds while making a fingertip catch in double coverage, Manningham defied comprehension – and stunned the Patriots.

New York went on to win 21-17 and Manning claimed his second Super Bowl MVP award thanks to Manningham, who made the biggest play of the Giants’ season.

Watch below: Was his Super Bowl catch the best ever?

One guy who may give Manningham a run for his money: David Tyree. Four years ago, HE made a key reception of a Manning pass that helped lead the Giants to victory.

Also trailing late in the fourth quarter against the Patriots, Eli’s escape and Tyree’s catch off of his own helmet have already gone down in Super Bowl history.

Take a look at that catch below:
