Diabetics to Paula Deen: You Hypocrite!!

January 19, 2012

Celebrity chef Paula Deen is, quite predictably, being called a hypocrite both for hiding her diabetes while promoting unhealthy foods and for turning around and partnering with a pharmaceutical drug company that provides relief for diabetics.

Deen, a popular Food Network host, confirmed Tuesday that she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, three years ago.

In the same breath, she announced a partnership with drug maker Novo Nordisk.

Fellow celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain is perhaps her best known and most vocal critic, but diabetics across the United States are up in arms at Deen’s disclosure.

“It is hypocritical [for Paula] to have continued to very publicly promote entirely unhealthy food choices so vital to the management of diabetes,” one told Fox411.

“We of course don’t know the terms of her contract with the company, but it seems either stupid or hypocritical of them to be endorsing her lifestyle,” says another.

Deen gave no comment when it was requested, but a source close to the network tells Fox411 that they found out about Deen’s condition only a week ago.

Some of Deen’s fans expressed outrage that the 65-year-old chef had found what they believe is a way to capitalize on a diagnosis she kept secret for so long.

“I understand she has an empire and a huge following to protect, but working with Novo Nordisk is just adding another revenue stream, and that is tweaking people like me who are in the diabetes education community,” said Carl Moore.

Moore, a type 2 diabetic and an educator on diabetic issues, said the news didn’t exactly come as a surprise to him and others with the disease.

“Many of us have watched the Buttuh Queen for years cooking with no thought for the consequences and waiting to hear she was diabetic,” he said.

Betsy Lampe, who has struggled with type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years, said Deen has already missed her first opportunity to educate victims.

“She didn’t tell us anything on the ‘Today Show’; she got really defensive,” Lampe said. “She didn’t even tell us what her blood sugars were.”

“You know, diabetics want to entertain and cook too. If I were her I would have announced a whole new show for entertaining as a diabetic. It was just offensive to me.

“She kept talking about moderation, but moderation in what? She didn’t explain.”

“She is overweight and that makes her, in my opinion, not credible or valid to promote diabetes drugs,” adds Richard Deems, a type 2 diabetic like Deen.

The American Diabetes Association, however, was supportive of the Southern chef.

“People may benefit from seeing how others successfully manage type 2 diabetes,” the group said in a statement. “Paula Deen, through her work with Diabetes in a New Light, is likely to inspire many people living with type 2 diabetes.”

Hopefully, the group says, people will “take a more positive approach to their diabetes care. We commend her for speaking out on behalf of people with type 2 diabetes and welcome her to the Association’s Stop Diabetes movement.”

American Idol Premiere Ratings Take a Plunge

When do 21.6 million viewers equate to a disappointing episode of television? When you’ve been the country’s top-rated series for years.

Indeed, American Idol earned the highest ratings on TV last night and will undoubtedly do so every evening it airs through the May finale – but its numbers were down 27% from the season 10 opener.

There are many reasons for this decline – all programs suffer viewer fatigue at some point, and the competition (The Voice, The Sing-Off, The X Factor) from similar shows has never been higher – but talent is not be among them.

There were actually a few strong acts last night, three of which we’ve posted again here:

Emily Maynard as The Bachelorette: Fan? Not a Fan?

As we reported Wednesday, Emily Maynard, the North Carolina single mother who Brad Womack proposed to last year on The Bachelor, will be the next Bachelorette.

People, which first confirmed the news, says production will reportedly move to Charlotte, N.C., so Maynard doesn’t have to be away from six-year-old daughter Ricki.

The back story is familiar by now: Ricki’s father, NASCAR star Ricky Hendrick, was killed in a plane crash in 2004, right before fiancee Emily learned she was pregnant.

Maynard, E.

We have mixed feelings about Emily Maynard’s casting.

Watching Ashley Hebert as The Bachelorette proved, sadly in Ashley’s case, that plenty of men would gladly bend over backwards to compete for … Emily.

For good reason. She’s sweet, fun, polite, gorgeous, prioritizes being a mom. Other girls on The Bachelor even said her only fault was that she had none.

Emily Maynard was even concerned about the example she’d set on The Bachelor, making clear she only went in the Fantasy Suite to talk to Brad more.

Therein lies the problem at the same time, though.

When The Bachelorette has a kid – one who never knew her dad and who witnessed Emily and Brad split, no less – can the little girl, and fans, respect her?

Moreover, can producers refrain, at least somewhat, from oversexualizing her, not to mention setting her up for frustration and humiliation, Bentley style?

It’ll be interesting to see. What do you think? Is Emily a good choice?

Taylor Swift and Zac Efron: Spotted! Giggling!

Might we soon need to Tac a new young power couple in Hollywood on to the board?

According to the latest issue of Us Weekly, Taylor Swift and Zac Efron (aka Tac, according to certain opening sentences) dined together at an Italian restaurant in Los Angeles.

Witnesses say the superstar singer and former High School Musical star “were deep in conversation and very giggly,” even arriving together in the latter’s Audi.

A source shoots down dating rumors between this pair, simply saying Taylor and Zac “were in L.A. doing press stuff together, and after they were done, they decided to grab dinner.”

And, yes, it is true that they are starring in The Lorax together. But what fun is that? Two professionals exchanging career-oriented talk and mere friendly banter?

It’s far more enjoyable to play this out in our minds and imagine Swift penning her next heartbreaking album about Efron, isn’t it?

The Twilight Saga to Continue Past Breaking Dawn?!?

Might November 16, 2012 not mark the beginning of the end for The Twilight Saga after all?

While we’re still nearly a year away from the release of Breaking Dawn Part 2, Lionsgate President Jon Feltheimer is already looking at life beyond the final installment of Stephenie Meyer’s novels – and he has an idea for how to milk the franchise for all it can produce.

“It’s hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn’t have ongoing value,” Felthemier said of the possibility that another film could be made. “It’s an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration.”

But the source material is tapped out. How could the studio back another Edward and Bella-based saga?

“Maybe go back into some of the back stories,” Feltheimer suggested. “There’s been talk of shorts and different new media, too.”

Only time, and screaming Twihard reaction, will tell. But what do you think of this plan? Do you want to see Twilight extended beyond Breaking Dawn?

Sarah Drew Welcomes Baby Boy!

Sarah Drew has become a first-time mom.

The Grey’s Anatomy star delivered son Micah Emmanuel Lanfer at 6:21 p.m. Wednesday in Los Angeles. She did not know the gender until that very moment!

“She and her husband, Peter Lanfer, are in love with him!” her rep says of the couple’s new baby boy, who weighed in at 7 lbs., 4 oz and is 19 inches long.

“I thought it would be a good idea to wait to find out because I’m such a control freak by nature,” Drew explained of their decision to be surprised at the birth.

“I am about to walk into this chapter of my life where I have no control over anything anymore, and I figured I’d ease myself into it by not allowing myself to plan.”

“It was hard but in the end it’s good training for me!”

Congratulations to Sarah and her growing family, and expect another new addition to the extended Grey’s family this year – Jessica Capshaw is pregnant again!

Jessica Simpson: Baby Bumpin’ and Beautiful!

We have to say, Jessica Simpson makes a cute pregnant person.

She may be ballooning by the day, but the 31-year-old singer isn’t about to let that stop her from getting out and about – in glamorous fashion.

Jess stepped out looking ultra chic in Los Angeles earlier this week, wearing a beautifully ornate black and grey patterned dress and black jacket.

With her adorable baby bump on display, flawless make-up and silver and black high heels completed the look for the pop star / fashion mogul:

Suffice it to say, pregnancy looks good on J-Simps.

Although it is not clear when exactly her first child is due, she has had she is expecting a spring baby with her fiance, former NFL player Eric Johnson.

Jessica has also been upfront about her pregnancy cravings, recently revealing that she is enjoying indulging in all her favourite childhood foods.

Hey, what better excuse than eating for two?

Adam Lambert Labels Finland Fight “Childish, Irresponsible” [Video]

He’s already issued a couple statements on the incident, but Adam Lambert sat down with Ellen DeGeneres this week and addressed his fight with boyfriend Sauli Koskinen for the first time in person.

A quick refresher: Lambert and Koskinen were both arrested in late 2011 after they engaged in a drunken brawl just prior to Christmas.

“We had too much to drink. We screwed up,” the singer told the host. “There were no injuries, no violence. It was more of childish, foolish, messiness… I was a little irresponsible and I think what I learned from the experience was that I owe it to myself, to my loved ones, and to my fans to be a little more adult and pull it together.”

As seen below, Adam concludes that his New Year’s resolution was to clean up his act and he now feels “amazing.”

Apple Announcement: iBooks 2 to Replace Textbooks!

Make no mistake, Apple’s announcement of its new iBooks 2 for Digital Textbooks today wasn’t quite as awe-inspiring as the unveiling of some of its past innovations.

The loss of co-founder Steve Jobs certainly contributed to that.

Still, the company which changed music with its iPod and mobile communications with the iPhone, said today it was offering software that would reinvent textbooks.

It was a project inspired by Apple’s late CEO Jobs himself:

“A lot may be wrong with education. One thing we hear louder than all else and where we can help is in student engagement,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing chief.

“That’s why we get excited when students get their hands on an iPad. “The textbook is not always the ideal learning tool,” said Schiller. “Yet their content is amazing.”

As such, Schiller and his Apple colleagues showed off two new applications to take the information in textbooks and put it, in interactive form, on iPads and computers.

iBooks 2, a free download for iPads, available from Apple’s app store starting today. iBooks Author is a tool he said authors and publishers can use on their computers.

The new interactive books would cost $14.99, far less than most paper textbooks. They could be updated continually, said Apple, without a programming degree.

Students will be able to “mark up” iPad books electronically, creating the digital equivalent of note cards as they go through lessons, and keep the iBooks when done.

Apple is partnering with three of the biggest publishers of school texts: Pearson, McGraw-Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, responsible for 90 percent of U.S. textbooks.

Will it be successful? Do you really have to ask?

Rihanna to Perform With Coldplay at Grammys

Rihanna and Coldplay will perform together at next month’s Grammy Awards.

The pop star, who is nominated for four Grammys including album of the year for Loud, tweeted the news to her followers Wednesday, calling it “BONKERS.”

Coldplay is up for three awards. It’s unclear what song the two will perform together, but they collaborated recently on Coldplay’s “Princess of China” …

While it’s been reported that Rihanna and Chris Brown are hooking up again, that’s far from confirmed … but they are both expected at the Grammys.

Legendary Beatles frontman Paul McCartney was announced Thursday by The Recording Academy as another performer on the February 12 broadcast.

NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J will host the annual music extravaganza, which will be broadcast on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
