Jesus Montero for Michael Pineda Trade Stuns Baseball: Who Won It?

January 14, 2012

The New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners shocked the baseball universe last night by completing a four-player trade centered around two of the most hyped young stars in baseball:

Jesus Montero – who hit over .300 and blasted four home runs for the Yankees in 18 regular season games last year – was swapped for 22-year pitching phenom Michael Pineda, who finished 2011 with a 3.74 ERA and 173 strikeouts in 171 innings.

The deal provides Seattle with an upgraded offense, and the Yankees with a solid number-two starter behind C.C. Sabathia.

Considering the premium placed on young, cheap starting pitching, most experts agree the Yankees came out on top here. Remember the Hanley Ramirez-for-Josh Beckett deal between the Red Sox and Marlins, for example? Ramirez went on to become one of the top 10 hitters in baseball… yet Boston would do that swap all over again in a heartbeat.

Who do you think got the best of the Yankees/Mariners trade?

Heather Locklear: Headed to Rehab?

Heather Locklear left UCLA Hospital last night, following an emergency admission that stemmed from a dangerous mix of pills and alcohol, but reports indicate her family hopes the actress ends up back in the facility soon.

For treatment.

Sources tell Entertainment Tonight that the veteran actress was “out of control” when her sister called 911 on Thursday afternoon, while an insider admits to People:

“Heather is in bed all the time, usually four days out of the week. Hung over, she lays in bed; she’s depressed, she just hangs out.”

As a result, Locklear’s loved ones are pushing for the star to receive help at an actual hospital, not some posh boutique facility, such as Promises in Malibu.

In March 2008, Heather’s doctor called the authorities after a rumored suicide attempt by his patient. Months later, Locklear sought treatment at an Arizona facility for anxiety and depression. She was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in September of that year.

Let’s all hope this beautiful, talented actress soon finds the help she very much needs.

Paula Deen Can’t Eat Own Dishes Due to Diabetes

The Food Network’s Paula Deen is about to come clean with an ironic, sad admission: She can’t eat her own dishes anymore because she has diabetes.

The Georgia-born chef, considered the queen of high-calorie, Southern comfort food who has five best-selling cookbooks, has never addressed this.

In fact, she has been trying to keep her condition a secret, even after the National Enquirer reported in April 2011 that she has Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes has often been associated with fatty foods and obesity.

Neither Paula Deen, 64, nor her reps have confirmed this report.

If Paula’s brand is hurt by this revelation, she’s covering her bases.

Sources say Deen has hammered out a seven-figure deal to be the spokeswoman pharmaceutical company Novartis, endorsing the drug she is taking.

Makes sense. But repositioning herself may prove a tough task.

“Paula Deen is going to have to rebrand herself now that she has diabetes,” said a source. “She’s going to have to start cooking healthier recipes.”

“She can’t keep pushing mac and cheese and deep-fried Twinkies when she is hawking a diabetes drug five minutes later.”

In August, No Reservations host Anthony Bourdain called Deen “the worst, most dangerous person to America” and said she should “think twice before telling an already obese nation that it’s OK to eat food that is killing us.”

Never one to mince words, Anthony Bourdain.

Sean Preston Federline Shakes His Groove Thing

Britney Spears is loving life at home these days.

Just days after posting some adorable kid photos on Facebook and Twitter, the singer uploaded a video of her eldest son showcasing his dance skills.

Check out six-year-old Sean Preston Federline getting DOWN to the oldie “Shake Your Groove Thing” by Peaches & Herb through a video game …

It would be cute to see the little fella bust a move no matter how good he was, but the youngster does appear to have some talent, doesn’t he?

He’s certainly got the focus. When younger brother Jayden James, 5, got anywhere near Preston’s dance zone, he was promptly chastised.

Kids. Keep the video and pics coming, Britney!

Mena Suvari and Simone Sestito: It’s Over

Mena Suvari and Simone Sestito are throwing in the towel.

An attorney for the actress, 32, filed divorce papers on her behalf on Friday in L.A. County Superior Court. She and Sestito, a concert promoter, have no kids.

According to court papers, Suvari cited “irreconcilable differences” and asked that Sestito receive no spousal support. She cited a separation date of 11/1/11.

The couple met at the Toronto Film Festival in 2007 and got engaged in 2008. This will be Suvari’s second divorce; she split from Robert Brinkmann, in 2005.

Mena is set to reprise her role in the next American Pie film installment, due out later this year. If you haven’t seen it, here’s the American Reunion trailer.
