Scott Brown is a Massachusetts State Senator and U.S. Senate candidate vying to replace the late Ted Kennedy in a special election taking place today.

The little-known politician made an amazing run, putting once-heavy favorite Martha Coakley on the hot seat as Massachusetts voters head to the polls.

Scott won the magazine’s “America’s Sexiest Man” contest that year, back when he was a 22-year-old law student at Boston College. You can see why.

If he prevails, you may be looking at the new face (and naked body) of the Republican party. Good looks and half a brain? Quite a combo. Sorry, Sarah Palin.

It’s clear who the loser is in the recent NBC late-night shake-up: Conan O’Brien.

But it’s also apparent who the winner has become in this mess of a situation: David Letterman.

The Late Show host has gotten in numerous attacks on Jay Leno and NBC over the past couple weeks, prompting NBC executive Dick Ebersol to call him and O’Brien “chicken-hearted and gutless” for their take on the mess.

Naturally (and hilariously), Letterman responded to this critique last night. After subtly tweaking Leno’s reputation as America’s friendly everyman, he said: “I’m telling jokes and making fun of Jay Leno relentlessly, mercilessly, simply for one reason: I’m really enjoying it.”

Less than a week after the glitz and glamour of the Golden Globes, Hollywood’s finest will attend the Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 23. Newly named as presenters at Saturday’s soiree are Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Sigourney Weaver, and latest It Girl Carey Mulligan. The stars will join previously announced presenters, including Alec Baldwin, George Clooney and Meryl Streep. A highlight of the show will surely be Golden Girls‘ Betty White receiving the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award from recent Golden Globe winner Sandra Bullock. After stints as an actor, rapper and celebrity club DJ, Nick Cannon can now add “radio host” to his extensive résumé. Mariah Carey‘s hottie husband manned the mic at 92.3 NOW (WXRK-FM) in New York for the first day on January 19, and will continue to host “Rollin’ with Nick Cannon” weekdays from 6-10 a.m. ET. Nick seemed excited to hit the airwaves as he spoke with In Touch after a DJ gig at Shrine Nightclub at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Connecticut on January 15. “I’ll just be bringing the fun, bringing the jokes, and good music!” he said of starting his new show, adding that he’s still searching for a co-host. After a successful first day, Nick ended with DJ Sammy’s romantic club hit, “Heaven” — perhaps an ode to his beautiful wife?

Actor Sean Patrick Thomas and wife Aonika Laurent are expecting a child.

It will be #2 for the couple. Laurent will deliver their second child early this summer. “All is going well and they are due in June,” says Sean’s rep Karen Samfilippo.

The new arrival will join big sister Lola Jolie, 20 months. The couple, both 39, wed in New Orleans in 2006. Things appear to be going well for them these days!

Congrats to Sean Patrick Thomas and Aonika Laurent!

Thomas, who is best known for his role opposite Julia Stiles in Save the Last Dance, recently appeared on the FOX series Lie to Me as a Secret Service agent.

As usual, The Hollywood Gossip staff endured The Bachelor last night to bring you our official recap, with points awarded/docked according to our scientific system.

In the season’s third episode, Vienna Girardi emerged as a frontrunner, and Michelle became even more insane. Here’s THG’s take on that and so much more …

Jake takes Vienna bungee jumping “to overcome their fears as a couple.” A couple who met like 10 days ago. And jumps off a bridge entirely by choice. Minus 5.

Plus 12, though, for the show blatantly recycling this story line from Jason and Molly’s season, but Minus 12 for V saying she’s “on cloud Jake right now.” Wow.

Michelle: “I really want a 1-on-1 date with Jake. I really do.” You’re joking! Plus 16, as she also wants to kiss Jake softly and pull his hair. She is bat$h!t insane.

Plus 6 to Jon Lovitz for purposely not being funny at his own comedy club, in order to help take the pressure of the suitors. (That is what he was doing, right?!?)

Corrie absolutely trashes Vienna Girardi in her standup routine, and other girls throw her under the bus too. Minus 10 for the cattiness, even for The Bachelor.

The girls HATE Vienna, yet we never see her do anything bad. A theory? It’s part of the narrative so we’re “shocked” when she wins (see Bachelor spoilers). Even.

Ali on Michelle: “She just seems a little off.” Ya think?! Plus 2.

Ella had a nice date with Jake at Sea World. They’re great together, but Minus 4 because they involved her 7-year-old son when she’s obviously not gonna win.

Tenley Molzahn opens up to Jake about her past and divorce. We admit it, we’re finally hooked on a contestant. She seems so sincere and squeaky. Plus 13.

Jake and sweet, sweet Tenley have a tender moment.

Jake: “I’m not a serial dater.” With the exception of appearing on two reality shows based around dating. Minus 4, because we thought he “believed in the process.”

Mean, when Michelle pressures Jake to kiss her, and he reluctantly does so, his expression is PRICELESS. Plus 1,000 because he’s as scared of her as we are!

Minus 7 for Elizabeth being such a tease, and a really bad one at that. Seriously, girls used to play these games with us in fifth grade. They totally worked, but still.

Simon Cowell said he had “a horrible feeling that song could be a hit,” and it’s become one! When American Idol contestant “General” Larry Platt debuted his hilarious original song “Pants on the Ground” on last week’s Idol tryout episode, it caused a sensation even Simon couldn’t have counted on — and now, Larry is being offered a recording contract! The tune has already been lovingly parodied by Jimmy Fallon and even sung in the Minnesota Vikings’ locker room, and Larry has made an appearance on The View. Larry, 63, was nicknamed “General” for his fierce dedication to his job — he works at an Atlanta homeless shelter — and for his heroism during the civil rights struggles in the South during the 1960s.

As if we needed another reason to love Robert Pattinson.

The Twilight Saga star will join a number of other celebrities this Friday as part of Hope for Haiti, the George Clooney-hosted telethon that will air across all major networks and focus on earthquake relief in that troubled nation.

Reports indicate that Robert will be the sole presenter in London, likely introducing performances by Jay-Z and Bono.

Artists performing during the live, two-hour event will include Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Shakira and Bruce Springsteen.

Meanwhile, other A-listers scheuled to present and/or work the phone lines will be: Jennifer Aniston, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brad Pitt, Anna Kendrick, Sandra Bullock, Zac Efron, Bradley Cooper, Renée Zellweger, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Colin Farrell and Jon Hamm.

Stars such as Sanda Bullock, Gisele Bundchen and Brangelina have already donated at least $1 million each to the cause.

Rumors have continued to fly about Jessica Simpson and Billy Corgan on the romantic front, but after a month of heavy flirting, things have reportedly cooled off.

“Jessica loved spending time in and out of the studio with Billy,” a pal said of Jess and the Smashing Pumpkins frontman. “She’s in awe of his musical prowess.”

“It added up to serious feelings, but they are not actually dating.”

The source said that Jessica Simpson and Billy Corgan were introduced by a music producer pal, and they’ve worked together both in New York and Los Angeles.

The insider said Corgan was making an effort to visit her beyond their musical collaboration, but that the two were probably too different for that to work.

“Dating Jessica can be intense. Billy lives a quiet, private, music-focused life and the taste of publicity he got being with Jessica was an eye opener,” the source said.

The pal said hanging with Corgan is helping Jess “finally grow up.”

“[Jessica Simpson] has gotten fed up with doing things for other people … she barely wears makeup these days. She eats whatever she wants. She once was a slave to what people thought, but Billy has brought out a mature, toned down Jessica.”
